Karla, 8/23/18

Please join us in congratulating Karla today for ending her homeless situation by getting into her own rental. Due to a medical condition Karla lost her last housing and after couch hopping with friends and family received a long awaited housing voucher which allows her to rent her own place that fits her budget. To help her over the financial hurdle of obtaining housing, we were happy to pay her security deposit so she could move in. Read Karla’s story below:

Dear OTS,
I am a 39 year old with a history of prolactinoma. It all started when I was 15. I was diagnosed with a pituitary adenoma ( tumor) in the brain. I have undergone 2 unsuccessful surgeries.the first one was when I was 17 and since I was covered by my father’s insurance as soon as turned 18 they took me off so I went with No medical treatment for years and years so the tumor grew back. No one would sell me medical insurance due to a preexisting condition I was eligible for medical until I was in a car accident where I flew out of the car in 2002 and at the hospital They said I was eligible for MSI (medical services for Indigents) that’s when I started treatment and went thru The last surgery In 2011 which left me with a paralyzed right eye and still half of the tumor still inside of my brain because they weren’t able to get the rest out due to they can’t get too close to the gland and damage it with a possibility of it leaving me blind. For that reason I have not been able to work which is why I wasn’t able to keep the apartment I once had. Now I’ve been staying with friends at times with family recently. I’ve been at my brothers but he’s got a crowded house as it is with 3 kids and his wife in a 2 bedroom, but. I finally received my section 8 voucher which I’ve been waiting three years for which is why I’m asking for the assistance with my security deposit from OTS.
Thank you, Karla

Karly is the 111th person we’ve helped get off the streets this year and the 621st we’ve helped since we started OTS in 2014. Read more about our charity at OTSHB.COM.
