Rachel and her 4 kids, 5/15/18

Today we congratulate Rachel and her 4 kids for ending their homeless situation and reuniting after being separated. We built a budget with Rachel and were happy to pay her security deposit so they could move in.

Dear OTS, I am a single mother of 4 kids who has been homeless and away from 2 of the 4 kids for 5 weeks. While recovering from a c-section with my son Alexander my landlord began to harass me. One day he was caught looking through my 10 year old daughter bedroom window without us knowing he was even on the property. I called the police unknowing it was the landlord until after I placed the call, I called simple because my daughter told me a man was looking through the window. After that my landlord attempted to get my Housing voucher cancelled by telling me I couldn’t park in my own driveway to bring my children in the house. I was told I would be evicted and lose my housing so I agreed to move. Although we had not secured another residence, I move out. I begged the landlord to let me stay until my house was ready and he refused. We have been separated every since and having been living with a family member in one room that couldn’t hold all 4 children and we couldn’t move until we have a security deposit for our new residence. This is truly a blessing. I located a new place to live but was unable to come up with the deposit. I decided to leave my newborn with a daycare and worked for free for a week to prove I had the skills needed to get a job as a paralegal at a small law firm. I am now working and training at the same time to help provide a roof over my children’s head but it still wasn’t enough to make it by the deadline needed to keep my Housing Choice Voucher. – Rachel
